Dear Brother Ron
What does Jesus mean when He refers to Himself as the "Alpha and Omega" (Revelation 1:8 & 22:13)?
Reborn
Dear Reborn
First of all, the verses you quote refer to God, not Jesus. Your confusion is somewhat understandable. Throughout the Old Testament, God is referred to repeatedly as Lord. Since He is Lord of the universe, this is entirely appropriate. But the New Testament uses the term to refer to both God and Jesus. In both cases, the word is translated from the Greek kurios, meaning one with supreme authority.
I believe that the people in the time of Jesus used
the term on a more personal basis. By using this term, they were
recognizing Him as one with supreme power over their lives. But Jesus
realized that His Father was the one with the real power. He said as
much when He was brought before Pilate.
John 19:10-
Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet.
Greek was the preferred language of the Roman Empire at the time Jesus
was alive and for many years after. Most of the New Testament was
translated from Greek manuscripts. God means He is the beginning and the
end, as the verse explains.
Revelations 1:8 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending,
saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the
Almighty.”
Best always
Brother Ron
