Alternatives to Higher Education
So you don't see yourself sitting in a class for years. You are looking for other ways to get the training and experience you need. Here are some good ways to get training and experience without going to college.
Join the military
You get experience, training, room and board and a paycheck. Plus you can retire after 20 years and get a check every month for life. You also get preference in applying for civil service jobs after retirement. OK-so you might have to go fight a war. No job is perfect. But for many people, military service is a great way to find and prepare for a career while serving your country (which has its own satisfactions). After you leave the service, you also get great education benefits which can allow you to get your education without a monstrous student loan hanging over your head. Service in the National Guard or Reserve offers many of the same benefits as full-time active duty..

Don't like fighting or saluting?
Check out Freedom Corps
Through Freedom Corps, you can learn about opportunities with the Peace Corps, Americorps, Senior Corps, and the new Citizen Corps. The money isn't great. In some cases, there's no money at all. But you get a chance to learn a lot about yourself, develop skills and leave the world a better place than you found it.

Job Corps is a U.S. Department of Labor program for young adults from low-income families. You get training, free room and board, spending money and social activities. Like the military and Freedom Corps, you are an employee, not a student. So while you are acquiring job skills, you are also getting experience which looks great on your resume.
