Book Burnings

Dear Brother Ron

Would you participate in a book burning directed by your church? If so, would you read each one first or would you trust your fellow man to decide for you?

MB

Dear MB

We are told by the churches that we have free will to choose how we live our life. The Declaration of Independence says that all men have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The implication is we have the right to choose our definition of happiness and how we pursue it. The first Amend- ment to the constitution guarantees freedom of speech. There seems to be a general consensus here.

I am opposed to any group who thinks they have the right to make decisions that God and the government think I am smart enough to make for myself. I am insulted by those who think I need them to do my thinking for me. Besides, I find that many of these groups do not have a sound basis for their opposition to certain books.

I have heard people say that many classic works should be banned, including Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz and many others. If you wanted to get really weird, you could say that Peter Pan should be burned (he lives on an island where no females are allowed and his best friend is a fairy). What about cartoon characters like Donald Duck and Porky Pig who don't wear pants? The list goes on and on.

I really don't trust religious groups who like to burn stuff. One Inquisition was quite enough.

Best always
Brother Ron
