Genesis 4:19

Dear Brother Ron

What happened to the two married women in Genesis 4:19?

"Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah"
Genesis 4:19

El Paso

Dear El Paso

Lamech is known to Biblical scholars as the first bigamist. From their names, it might be implied that Adah (whose name means adornment or beauty) was chosen by Lamech to gratify his carnal needs. Zillah (whose name means shadow or protection), seems to have been selected more as a mother and protector of children.

Both women bore children. Adah was the mother of Jabal and Jubal. Jabal became known for his skill as a herdsman of cattle while Jubal was a talented musician. Zillah gave birth to Tubalcain, who taught many the art of working with brass and iron, and his sister Naamah.

It is interesting to note here the rapid development of the human race. We are only a few chapters away from Adam and Eve being kept children of God with no skills, training or experience. Yet here we find people becoming experts in agriculture and metallurgy. Jubal is said to be proficient with the harp and organ. Both are fairly complicated instruments requiring precise skill in their manufacture. We are amazed that people could have developed this level of technology in only seven generations.

There is no further mention of these two women. This is understandable as women at that time had only two functions-sexual gratification of their husbands and procreation. Although it is the woman who carries the child through gestation and gives birth, throughout the Bible, the man gets all the credit. When lineages are listed, only the father's name is given. Actually, the reason for this goes beyond male chauvinism. Back then, a lot of women died in childbirth. Men never did. So tracking lineage through the father was a more reliable method.

Hope this helps.

Best always
Brother Ron
