Jealous God

Dear Brother Ron

According to 1 John 4:8 God is love, and according to 1 Corinthians 13, love is not jealous. So how can God, according to Exodus 34:14, be jealous?

Angel

Dear Angel

Consider the context in which the Exodus verse is written. The Hebrews were about to go to war with the the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. All of these were idol worshipers. This is part of God's injunction not to adopt the religions of these people.

You must also remember that the Hebrews were living under a theocracy. The priests were the government. Any threat to religious loyalty was a threat to the very fabric of their social structure. The Hebrews were united by tribal kinships and their relationship with God. Destroy that relationship and you destroy the nation of Israel.

God may not be jealous but his priests sure were.

Best always
Brother Ron
