Killing the Prophets

Dear Brother Ron

Can you help me understand the following passage:

Luke: 47-51: "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.' Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

Who is Jesus is addressing here, Jews or non-jews? Who are the Prophets killed before him? The only biblical prophet who was martyred that I know of is John the Baptist. Who else is Jesus talking about?

Thanks in advance.

Happy

Dear Happy

Actually, the phrase you cite is from Matthew 23:29-36. Since the passage begins with the words "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites", it is obvious who Jesus is talking to in this passage.

There are several mentions of prophets being martyred in the Bible:

1 Kings 18:4 "While Jezebel was killing off the LORD's prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.

2 Kings 6:31 "He said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!"

2 Chronicles 24:21 But they plotted against him (Zachariah), and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD's temple.

Jeremiah 26:23 They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.

Hope this helps

Best always
Brother Ron
