The Narrow Gate

Dear Brother Ron

What does "The Narrow Gate Mean" in terms of the Sermon on the Mount? Mathew: Chapter 7 Verses 13-14: "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction; and those who enter it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, and those who find it are few."

Anna V

Dear Anna V

The words “straight” and “strait” have very different meanings. The former means “not crooked;” the latter, “pent up, narrow, difficult to be entered.” This is the word used here, and it means that the way to heaven is “pent up, narrow, close,” and not obviously entered. The way to death is open, broad, and thronged.

What Jesus is telling us here is that following God is not easy. Sometimes you really have to  do some serious seeking to find the right path. And even after you find it, the road will not be easy. You will encounter a lot of obstacles along the way. You will also be frequently tempted to take the wrong road that will not take you where you want to go. Many will decide to take the superhighway that leads nowhere.

The good news is those who choose to take the time and trouble to follow the road God has laid out for them will find their efforts have led them to the reward they seek. This is the promise out Father has made to us.

Best always

Brother Ron
