Prosperity Gospel

Dear Brother Ron

What is your opinion on prosperity gospel/very wealthy TV pastors? I'm a Christian but I'm confused about this. They claim that God wants everyone to be very prosperous and rich but to me it doesn't feel right even if they give lots to the poor? I can understand God wanting you to be reasonably abundant but I don't see why anyone needs all of their clothes to be expensive and have huge mansions etc?

I don't want to be judgmental Maybe it's just my lack of understanding but I don't get this. These preachers have Jesus and the Holy Spirit guiding them so if it was wrong in the eyes of God, wouldn't they have been told to repent and change? I'm confused. The part that I'm really confused about is these people have Jesus in their heart and have been baptized in the Holy Spirit (I presume) so how come Jesus and the Holy Spirit don't convict them of what they're doing and show them that it's wrong? I appreciate your answer.

Maria

Dear Maria

God does indeed want his children to be successful and free from want. This does not necessarily mean He wants the preacher to have a new Cadillac every year. Jesus told us that he would be greatest should be the servant of all. I agree with you that a minister who flaunts wealth is basically wanting people to be impressed with his material success.

A minister should build his reputation by doing the work of our Father. I am reminded of Matthew 5:16-"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven". Notice that the object is for people to glorify God, not the preacher. Jesus had a lot of things to say about ministers who used their office to win the praise of humans. Most of them were not complimentary.

Best always
