When Should I Be Baptized?

Dear Brother Ron

When should I be baptized? I always thought I was baptized as a child, but I wasn't. I am now 23 and considering it. I don't know where to began though. I hear I need to take classes for a year then pay to get baptized. Is this true?

Sophia

Dear Sophia

You do not need classes and you do not need to pay a fee. All you need is an internal commitment to love and serve God. Baptism is a public demonstration that one has received the Holy Spirit and has made a commitment to follow the dictates of that Spirit in all things. The baptism requiring classes and fees is to prepare one for a formal initiation into a certain denomination. This is not the baptism the Bible spoke of.

Act 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
Act 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Clearly baptism is meant as a public demonstration of inner faith, not membership in an exclusionist sect. If you want to be baptized, find a church which will do it in the spirit it was intended.

Best always
Brother Ron
