Why Do People Try To Force Their Beliefs on Me?

Dear Brother Ron

I'm at work and this guy talks about how hot this lady is in the picture and it turns out that is a Chinese or Thai god or spiritual figure like the Virgin Mary. He asked if I believed in that and I said no. He asked if I was Buddhist. I said no. He kept asking and I said I don't have a religion, I do believe in God and all I just don't choose ONE WAY. And he kept lecturing me how I SHOULD CHOOSE one religion to have God help me so that I won't go to hell. Who the heck is he to tell me what to do? I said, "Sir, you have your beliefs and I have mine, let's leave it at that. I don't think I'm going to hell."

He just kept going on and on! Now I know what an atheist feels like although I'm not one.

Dear Yahoo

You believe in God. That's good. That means you are a spiritual person. You are not a religious person. That's OK too. Religion and spirituality are two different things entirely. Spirituality is how you relate to the Spirit of God within you. Religion is the public display of that relationship.

Religions serve a lot of good purposes. They give you an opportunity to fellowship with fellow believers and learn and grow from one another. They provide religious training for our children. When a group unites its spiritual energies and focuses them, they produce a symbiotic effect (the whole is greater than the sum of its parts). And churches are far more efficient than the government or even most charities in providing help to the needy.

As fas as going to hell if you don't have religion, that's just organizational marketing on the part of the various denominations. If you choose to keep your relationship with God private, I'm sure He won't mind at all.

Best always
Brother Ron
