You Are Going to Hell
Dear Brother Ron
Should you tell someone that they are going to hell? Don't you think that's a bit harsh? I mean I'm a Christian and I know plenty of people who are non believers but I would NEVER say something like that to them! I usually just pray for them. Do you think telling someone they are going to hell is appropriate?
Dear Sheer Joy
When did God appoint humans to determine who goes to hell and who doesn't? I thought that was God's job. In order to speak for God, you would have to be as wise as God. I don't know any humans who are that smart. I think it would be very egotistical for anybody to think they were.
Usually these pronouncements are made as a reaction to behavior the accuser finds offensive. Such condemnations, however, are usually not effective in correcting the offensive behavior. If somebody is doing something harmful to themselves or others, it is more effective to point out how their behavior is harmful and offer an alternative. Show them how your suggestion is more beneficial than their current course of action.
I find it more effective to appeal to a personís self-interest than to threaten them with eternal torment.
